Cubo Negro, Modern office building in Chuao, Venezuela
Cubo Negro, also known as Centro Banaven, is a 13-story modern office building completely covered in black glass panels and aluminum framing. It houses corporate offices, financial institutions, law firms, and restaurants along with fast food establishments on the lower levels.
The building was designed by American architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee between 1974 and 1978. Its geometric form and modern design principles represented new standards for architecture in Caracas at that time.
The interior features a monumental art installation by Jesus Soto made of thousands of cobalt blue aluminum tubes hanging from the ceiling. This sculpture creates a striking visual effect that greets visitors as they enter the main lobby.
The building is located in a central business district and is easy to explore on foot, with the main lobby offering the best view of the interior art installation. Visitors can enjoy restaurants and shops on the lower levels to spend time within the structure.
The structure follows a square floor plan with an internal diagonal pointing toward La Carlota airport. This unusual orientation creates varying floor layouts on each level and generates a complex internal circulation system with four distinct pathways.
