The William Phelps Ornithological Collection houses over 83,000 anatomical specimens and 8,000 scientific volumes in its research facilities at the Gran Sabana Building.
William H. Phelps Jr. established this scientific institution in 1949, following his father's expeditions that began documenting Venezuelan birds in 1937.
The collection serves as a primary reference for Latin American ornithology, containing specimens of 1,399 bird species recorded throughout Venezuela.
Researchers and students can access the collection, library, and archives Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM near Sabana Grande metro station.
The collection maintains the largest private ornithological archive in Latin America, featuring detailed records of tropical bird distributions and taxonomic classifications.
