Nghi Son Refinery, second planned oil refinery in Vietnam
Nghi Son Refinery is an oil refinery in Thanh Hoa Province along the Vietnamese coast, about 200 kilometers north of Hanoi. The facility processes roughly 200,000 barrels of crude oil daily and produces gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, liquefied petroleum gas, and chemicals such as benzene and para-xylene used across multiple industries.
The refinery was established in 2013 and began production in 2018. The project was a joint venture among PetroVietnam, Japanese firm Idemitsu, Kuwait Petroleum, and Mitsui Chemicals, with substantial financing from Japan and South Korea supporting the construction.
The site is expansive with specialized crude oil processing units, fuel storage tanks, and comprehensive safety systems throughout. The location features pipelines, ship loading terminals, and modern control facilities designed to maintain continuous operations and handle daily logistics efficiently.
The facility processes mainly high-sulfur crude oil from Kuwait, requiring specialized desulfurization units to meet environmental standards. The refinery operates a recovery system that recaptures certain chemicals for reuse, improving the efficiency of the refining process and reducing waste.
