Thorong La, Mountain pass in Manang District, Nepal
Thorong La is a mountain pass at 5,416 meters elevation, the highest point of the Annapurna Circuit between Manang and Mustang districts. It connects the Marsyangdi Valley on the eastern side with the Kali Gandaki Valley on the western side, surrounded by snow-covered peaks.
The Annapurna area opened to international trekkers in 1977 after local conflicts were resolved. Since then, this route has become one of the most frequently used high mountain passes in the Himalayan region.
The pass marks a boundary between two worlds: below live communities with Hindu traditions, while above are Buddhist settlements with Tibetan influence. Prayer wheels and local customs visible here reflect this spiritual diversity.
Trekkers should spend at least five nights in Manang for altitude acclimatization before crossing the pass. Temperatures can range from negative 20 to positive 7 degrees Celsius, so warm clothing and proper gear are essential.
The pass was long contested by Khampa guerrillas before becoming accessible to trekkers. This turbulent history is barely visible today, yet it continues to shape how the region is understood.
