Tsumadinsky District, Municipal district in Dagestan, Russia
Tsumadinsky District spans 1,100 square kilometers (425 square miles) across western Dagestan, containing 58 rural localities organized into 13 administrative subdivisions. The 23,345 residents are distributed across 23 rural settlements that function as basic administrative units.
The district was established in 1926 as an administrative division within Dagestan and continued through the period of the Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic until 1991. Since then, it has operated as a municipal district within the Russian Federation.
Residents live in traditional villages that have maintained their historical settlement patterns. Agvali serves as the administrative hub where local governance takes place.
The entire area is rural with only villages present, so visitors should expect basic infrastructure and limited services. Travel between settlements requires planning, as there are no urban centers with typical amenities.
With a population density of just 21 people per square kilometer, the district has an exceptionally sparse settlement pattern. This low density means villages are spread far apart and the landscape remains largely natural and open.
