New England, Cultural region in northeastern United States.

New England is a region made up of six northeastern states, stretching along the Atlantic coast between Canada and New York. The landscape ranges from rocky coastlines and forested hills to the northern mountains of Maine, dotted with small towns built from wood and red brick.

English settlements began along the coast in the early 1600s, where colonists established fishing, farming, and shipbuilding communities. This area became the birthplace of the American Revolution, launching resistance against British rule that spread across the colonies.

Coastal towns follow a maritime way of life, with fishing boats bringing in daily catches of lobster and clams. Waterfront restaurants serve chowder and steamed seafood year-round, while small breweries offer locally crafted beer and seasonal cider made from nearby orchards.

Autumn from September to October draws the heaviest crowds due to foliage, so book accommodations well ahead and expect busy roads. Spring and summer offer warmer weather for hiking in the mountains and visiting coastal beaches, with fewer travelers and open access to trails.

More than a hundred lighthouses line the coast, many still operating and open for visitors to climb. White wooden churches with tall steeples and central greens date back to the 1700s and remain the center of many small towns.
