The district extends across 172.7 square kilometers in western Austria, containing three municipalities: Dornbirn, Hohenems, and the market town of Lustenau.
Created in 1969 through separation from Feldkirch district, the area recorded a population growth from 16,801 residents in 1869 to 82,721 in 2012.
The district hosts multiple educational institutions, including the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, which offers programs in business, engineering, and social work.
District administration offices manage identification documents, business registrations, and public health initiatives through dedicated commissions serving the local population.
Hohenems, within the district boundaries, received town privileges in 1983, making it the most recently designated town in Vorarlberg.
