Hajiganj Fort, Mughal military fort in Narayanganj, Bangladesh
Hajiganj Fort is a military fortification on the western bank of the Shitalakshya River featuring a quadrangular shape with a pentagonal outer wall and rounded bastions at the corners. The design provided overlapping defensive views across the river and surrounding approaches.
The fort was built between 1610 and 1650 during the Mughal period as a defense against Magh and Portuguese pirates sailing upriver. It served as a key control point for river security in the region during this era.
The site displays traditional Mughal military architecture with gun ports, rampart passages, and ornamental lotus-topped gateways that remain visible today. These features reflect the defensive design practices of the period and shape how visitors experience the fort.
The fort is accessible by local buses with a short tuk-tuk ride to reach the site from the main road. Visiting early morning or late afternoon offers more comfort for walking through the grounds and observing architectural details.
Inside the fort stands a tall square brick tower that served as both an observation post and an elevated gun platform during monsoon flooding. This distinctive structure often goes unnoticed by visitors despite revealing how engineers adapted to seasonal water levels.
