Bibi Maryam Masjid, Mughal mosque in Hajiganj, Bangladesh
Bibi Maryam Masjid is a Mughal mosque in Hajiganj featuring three domes with a larger central one decorated with leaf patterns and crenellated parapets. The structure displays characteristic Mughal design elements typical of religious buildings from the 1600s period.
The mosque was built between 1664 and 1688 under the direction of Nawab Shaista Khan, the Mughal administrator of Bengal. It formed part of a fortified complex designed to serve both defensive and religious purposes during that era.
The mosque serves as a primary prayer center for the local Sunni Muslim community, hosting daily services and gatherings year-round. It remains an important gathering space where worshippers practice their faith together throughout the seasons.
The mosque underwent major renovation work in 2001 that added an upper floor and an eastern veranda supported by masonry pillars. Visitors should be aware of these modifications that changed the original building layout, though the main structure remains accessible.
The structure is named after Bibi Maryam, daughter of Nawab Shaista Khan, whose tomb sits near the mosque grounds. This personal connection links the building to both family history and community worship in a single location.
