Freedom Monument, Memorial monument in Freedom Square, Georgia.
The Freedom Monument is a public sculpture standing in Freedom Square, the main plaza in the center of Tbilisi, Georgia. A gilded bronze figure of Saint George on a rearing horse sits atop a tall granite column, which rises from a wide stone base at street level.
The square where the monument stands was known as Lenin Square during the Soviet era and was renamed after the Soviet Union collapsed. The monument itself was put in place in 2006, a few years after the 2003 Rose Revolution brought political change to Georgia.
Saint George appears on the Georgian national flag and in churches across the country, so seeing him here feels like a natural continuation of that presence. Visitors often notice flowers or small offerings left near the base, a sign that many locals treat the spot as more than a public landmark.
The monument stands in an open plaza in the heart of Tbilisi and is easy to reach on foot from the old town or nearby hotels. There are no barriers around the base, and the square is accessible at any time of day or night.
The sculptor Zurab Tsereteli made the statue at his own expense and donated it to the city of Tbilisi. The column it stands on was originally built to hold a different sculpture that was never completed.
