Canacona taluk, Administrative division in South Goa, India
Canacona taluk is an administrative region in southern Goa that stretches along the coast and includes several villages such as Patnem, Chaudi, and Agonda. The area lies at low elevation and borders the Arabian Sea with gradual transitions between settlements and natural landscapes.
The region was once called Kanvapura before coming under Portuguese control in 1794 following the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire's influence. This shift brought new administrative structures and architectural influences that shaped the landscape.
The Parthagali Math, an old ashram, serves as the main spiritual center and displays a blend of Portuguese and Hindu building styles that reflect the region's layered past. Local people continue to gather there for religious celebrations and daily worship.
The area is accessible via Canacona railway station, which connects to major cities, while National Highway NH17 provides direct road access. Visitors can use different transport options depending on whether they explore villages or natural areas.
The Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the larger protected areas in Goa, spreads across this taluk and is home to a variety of animal and plant species. The wilderness creates a strong contrast with nearby coastal settlements and offers visitors a rare blend of forest and coastal environments.
