Kishangarh is a city in Ajmer district, Rajasthan, sitting at an elevation of 433 meters (1420 feet). The settlement covers an area that includes several marble quarries producing white stone.
Prince Kishan Singh of Jodhpur founded the settlement in 1609 and gave it his own name. Under British colonial rule it developed into a princely state covering 2210 square kilometers (853 square miles).
The local painting tradition carries the name of this place and took shape during the 18th century under Maharaja Sawant Singh. Artists working in this style used fine brushwork and combined Indian themes with Persian design elements.
The place has an airport, a railway station, and road connections to other centers. It sits roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Ajmer and 90 kilometers (56 miles) from Jaipur.
