Osmania University, Public university in Hyderabad, India
Osmania University is a public institution in southern Hyderabad offering programs ranging from sciences to humanities. The main campus spreads across a large area with buildings that feature Indo-Saracenic design elements.
The seventh Nizam of Hyderabad founded the institution in August 1917 to offer education in the regional language of the time. Over the decades it grew into one of the largest universities in India with many affiliated colleges.
The institution takes its name from Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last ruling Nizam, and its original teaching language Urdu reflects the local tradition. Today the grounds serve as a meeting point where students from different regions come together to study and exchange ideas.
The campus lies south of the city center and can be reached easily by public transport. Visitors may view the architecture from the main grounds but should keep in mind that it remains an active academic environment.
As the first Indian institution to conduct all teaching in Urdu, it attracted learners from many countries during its early years. The library also holds a collection of old manuscripts used for academic research today.
