Shani Shingnapur, Hindu temple in Ahilyanagar district, India
Shani Shingnapur is a Hindu temple and a village in Ahilyanagar district, Maharashtra, where a black stone idol stands directly under the open sky on a raised platform. The idol is surrounded by a simple fence, and visitors approach it through a wide open area paved with stones.
Shepherds from the region found the black stone centuries ago in a field and recognized its sacred nature when it began to bleed after an accidental touch. The villagers built no roofed structure over the stone, believing the deity should be worshipped under the open sky.
The temple takes its name from Shingnapur and Shani, the Hindu deity associated with Saturn, whose worship has been passed down through generations. Devotees pour oil over the stone and bring flowers while reciting traditional prayers believed to ward off misfortune.
Visitors should arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the largest crowds, especially on Saturdays and new moon days. The area around the idol is flat and easy to walk through, with simple facilities for washing feet before approaching.
Every house and building in the village has no doors or locks, as residents believe the deity protects everyone from theft. Even the local bank branch follows this tradition and forgoes the usual security doors.
