Palghar, Administrative headquarters in Maharashtra, India
Palghar is an administrative town in Palghar district, roughly 87 kilometers north of Mumbai in Maharashtra, resting on gently sloping terrain near the western coast. The settlement combines several neighborhoods with residential areas, market streets, temples, and green spaces along the Vaitarna River, spread between hill ranges and coastal plains.
The settlement belonged to Thane district for centuries before becoming the capital of a newly created, separate district on August 1, 2014. This change followed a longer debate about dividing administrative territories in Maharashtra to better manage regional growth and infrastructure.
The name comes from the word meaning "first harbor" in local dialects, reflecting early trade routes along the coast. Visitors encounter several temples and community spaces where different groups celebrate their festivals and rituals.
Getting there usually involves arriving at the railway station, which is linked by the Western Line of Mumbai Suburban Railway and offers regular trains to Mumbai and Nashik. Visitors can move around by foot or with local vehicles through the main streets, with most points of interest near the station and along the riverfront.
The Vaitarna River bridge offers a viewing point where one can watch small fishing boats and waterbirds resting along the sandy banks. Local farmers sometimes sell fresh vegetables and rice directly by the roadside, especially in the early morning when the harvest arrives from surrounding villages.
