Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary

Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected forest area in Canacona featuring dense evergreen trees around 30 meters tall and numerous streams running through the landscape. The reserve contains different zones with varied vegetation that support a range of wildlife species.

The sanctuary was established in 1968 by the Government of Goa to protect the Western Ghats forest ecosystem and prevent species decline in the region. This designation marked a significant effort to preserve the natural heritage of the area.

Local residents have long-standing connections to the forest and share their knowledge with visitors through guided walks that highlight how people coexist with wildlife.

The best time to visit is between October and May when you can observe wildlife most easily during early morning hours at viewing points throughout the area. Following the marked paths and staying near designated spots increases your chances of seeing animals and keeps you safe.

The reserve is home to several animals rarely seen elsewhere, including flying squirrels and Indian pangolins that are difficult to spot in the wild. Visitors occasionally catch glimpses of four-horned antelopes or different viper species moving through their natural surroundings.
