The station extends across multiple underground levels, featuring seven platforms and six tracks that serve three different metro lines in central Shanghai.
Opening its doors on April 10, 1995, with Line 1, the station expanded its operations to include Line 2 in 1999 and Line 8 in 2007.
Musicians perform at a designated music corner every Saturday since 2013, transforming this transportation hub into a cultural meeting point for Shanghai residents.
The station processes more than 700,000 passengers daily through its multiple entrances, connecting to major shopping areas and office buildings in the district.
A 2009 engineering project converted a previous Line 1 connection into a new side platform for Line 8, improving the station's passenger circulation.
