Drigung Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Maizhokunggar County, Tibet, China
The monastery stands at 4,465 meters elevation on a mountain ridge, featuring temples and prayer halls that accommodate 250 resident monks.
Founded in 1179 by Jigten Sumgön, the monastery experienced destruction in 1290 during conflicts with rival sects and underwent reconstruction in subsequent years.
The monastery maintains the traditions of the Drigung Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, focusing on meditation techniques and spiritual development.
Visitors can access the monastery via shuttle bus from Lhasa Eastern Suburb Station, with the journey taking approximately three and a half hours.
The monastery includes a sky burial site at 14,975 feet where traditional Tibetan death ceremonies involve sacred vultures in morning rituals.
