Tekes County, Administrative county in Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, China
Tekes County is an administrative region in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture in northern Xinjiang. The territory spans mountainous and grassland areas with several towns and settlements, with Tekes Town serving as the administrative center.
The region was part of Sinkiang Province before 1949 and became an official county in 2001 within the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. This reorganization reflected changes in the administrative system across this part of Xinjiang.
The area is home to several ethnic groups living side by side in the region. Kazakhs, Han Chinese, Hui, Uyghurs, and other communities have kept their own traditions and ways of life, shaping how people interact and celebrate together.
The area is divided into ten administrative sections and multiple villages and hamlets spread across the terrain. Getting around depends on seasonal conditions and local road status, so checking local travel information before visiting is helpful.
The regional center follows an octagonal street layout based on the ba gua, an ancient Chinese symbol representing cosmic forces. This unusual design sets the town apart from typical urban patterns in the area.
