Aizhai Bridge, Suspension and road bridge in Jishou, Hunan province, China
The bridge extends 1,534 meters across DeHang Canyon with a main span of 1,176 meters and rises 336 meters above the river below, connecting two mountain tunnels in the mountainous terrain of western Hunan.
Construction of the bridge began in October 2007 and was completed ahead of schedule in late 2011, with the official opening to traffic taking place on March 31, 2012, reducing travel time between Jishou and neighboring areas from four hours to under one hour.
The bridge has become a major attraction in the region, drawing visitors who come to experience the glass walkway suspended high above the canyon and observe traditional cultural performances at the DeHang Canyon entrance below.
The structure measures 24.5 meters in width and accommodates multiple lanes of vehicular traffic as part of the expressway connecting Chongqing to Changsha, with 1,888 lights installed to ensure visibility and safety for nighttime crossing.
This structure holds the distinction of being the highest and longest bridge in the world to directly connect two tunnels, with towers only 50 meters tall positioned on mountain peaks, significantly reducing construction costs while blending naturally into the landscape.
