Wiehen Hills, Mountain range in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, Germany

The Wiehen Hills are a sandstone mountain range extending from the Weser River near Minden to Osnabrück, marking the boundary between the landscape and the North German Plain. The terrain features forested slopes with mixed woodlands and numerous trails for hikers and cyclists.

The area was inhabited during the Bronze Age, as evidenced by numerous burial mounds and standing stones documenting early human presence. Later, medieval structures such as mills and settlements shaped the landscape, showing centuries of human activity in these hills.

The Wittekindsweg trail takes its name from an early medieval leader and links several historic mills that blend into the landscape, reflecting how people once lived here. Visitors walking this route encounter traditional structures that show how communities adapted to life in these hills.

Several towns like Bad Essen and Ostercappeln provide access points to an extensive network of hiking and cycling trails suited for various fitness levels. The best time to explore is throughout the year, though spring and fall offer mild weather and easier woodland walks.

The eastern sections are home to rare tree species like the Süntel beech, which grows with distinctively twisted branches that catch the eye. These woodlands also preserve dinosaur tracks in the sandstone, offering a glimpse into the distant geological past.
