Illizi Province, Administrative province in southeastern Algeria
Illizi is a province in southeastern Algeria covering about 285,000 square kilometers of mostly desert terrain, home to the Tassili n'Ajjer mountain range. The landscape is scattered with archaeological sites and remains that span different periods across its expanse.
The province separated from Ouargla Province in 1984 and became its own administrative region with its own structure. Since then, it has grown into a strategically important area for Algeria's resource management and border security.
People here blend Berber and Arab traditions in their everyday life, keeping customs that have passed down through generations. You can see this mix in local celebrations, crafts, and how communities gather together.
The main cities of Illizi and In Amenas are the centers for government services and commercial activity across the province. You should know that the terrain is mostly desert, so plan your visit with that landscape in mind.
The region sits atop the Ain Tsila gas field, one of Algeria's major natural gas production sources. The facility is jointly operated by Sonatrach, the national energy company, and international partners.
