Mareia

Mareia is an archaeological site near Alexandria with remains of an ancient port along Lake Maryut's southern shore. Four long stone jetties extend from the shore into the water, showing the infrastructure that once allowed ships to dock.

A pharaoh established a military garrison here around 650 BCE to protect the western border following conflicts with Libyan groups. The site later developed into an important trading port that connected goods from various regions.

A large Byzantine basilica once stood here with marble columns and intricate stone floor patterns that reflect the spiritual importance of this place. The architectural details show how much care was invested in creating a gathering space for the local population.

The site is in an open area by the lake and is directly accessible, with stone structures remaining visible in strong sunlight. It is wise to bring water and sun protection as the location offers little shade.

The location was home to one of the largest pottery production centers in ancient Egypt, where ceramics were made on a large scale. This manufacturing capability made it an economic hub that distributed goods across wide distances.
