Tora Prison, prison complex in Egypt
Tora Prison is a large detention complex in Tura, on the southern edge of Cairo, made up of high walls and several separate housing blocks for different categories of inmates. Inside the secured perimeter, the facility also has a hospital section, outdoor sports areas, and gardens.
The prison was built in the early 1900s to ease overcrowding in older Cairo facilities and grew over the following decades with new wings added. After the political changes of July 2013, a separate section for political detainees was opened in 2014.
The complex is not open to the public and can only be seen from outside the perimeter. Visitors should stay well clear of the surrounding security areas and avoid approaching restricted zones.
Over the decades, the prison held some of Egypt's most recognized political figures, including journalists, activists, and senior officials from different governments. Its long connection to intelligence operations and interrogations has made it one of the most politically charged places in the country.
