Omayed, Biosphere reserve in western Egypt
The Omayed Biosphere Reserve spans 75,800 hectares of coastal desert region, featuring calcareous dunes, inland ridges, and saline depressions near Alexandria.
The reserve received UNESCO designation in 1981, with subsequent boundary extensions in 1998 to protect additional ecological zones and natural resources.
Four villages within the reserve maintain traditional agricultural practices, including fig plantations and grazing activities that shape the local landscape.
The reserve offers guided tours and educational programs through designated pathways, with research facilities monitoring ecosystem changes and biodiversity patterns.
While occupying only 0.07% of Egypt's territory, the reserve contains 17% of the country's moss flora, including 29 documented species.
