Sodo, City in Ethiopia
Sodo is a large city in the Wolayita Zone in southern Ethiopia that serves as the administrative and trading center for the region. The city is divided into seven sub-cities separated by short distances and connected by local buses and minibus routes.
Sodo developed over time into an important administrative center for the Wolayita Zone, owing its strategic importance to its location at the edge of the Great Rift Valley. The city is known as the City of Seven Gates because seven main roads with gates connect it to neighboring zones.
Residents of Sodo speak Wolayttittuwa as their main language and come from different backgrounds living harmoniously together. Local markets come alive on Mondays and Saturdays when farmers and traders gather to sell traditional textiles and crafts that reflect the region's heritage.
The city is easily reached by buses that run regularly between Addis Ababa and nearby towns, offering good connections. Once there, visitors can use motorcycles, taxis, and Bajaj vehicles to travel within the city and explore different neighborhoods.
Waterfalls and rock formations lie within reach, including Ajora twin falls roughly 56 kilometers northwest and Mochena Borago Rockshelter with remarkable rock formations. An artificial lake called Uma north of the city offers a quiet spot for walking and relaxation.
