Lacs Jovet, Glacial lakes in Les Contamines-Montjoie, France.
Lacs Jovet are two mountain lakes located at approximately 2175 meters (7,136 feet) elevation in the French Alps. They sit in a landscape of alpine meadows and rocky slopes that create a distinct alpine lake setting.
These lakes formed during the last ice age when glacial movements carved deep basins into the French Alpine landscape. Glacial erosion shaped the valleys and left behind the basin formations visible today.
The lakes form part of the Tour du Mont Blanc trail, connecting multiple mountain refuges that maintain traditional Alpine hospitality practices.
Access to the lakes comes from a hiking trail starting at Notre Dame de la Gorge, and the ascent is demanding and takes several hours. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and bring weather protection, as conditions at this elevation change rapidly.
During summer months, marmots and ibexes are commonly spotted in this area, as they live at this high elevation. The fragile ecosystem here is protected by restrictions on camping and swimming in the lakes.
