Tamhini Ghat, Mountain pass in Western Ghats, Maharashtra, India
Tamhini Ghat is a mountain pass cutting through heavily forested terrain of the Western Ghats, connecting the Mulshi region to Maharashtra's coastal areas. The road winds through varying elevations with sharp bends and steep sections characteristic of Sahyadri mountain routes.
This mountain pass was developed by Tata Power as an additional transportation link between Pune and the Konkan region through the Sahyadri mountains. The project opened a new route that better connected highland communities with commercial centers in the plains.
Communities near this pass have kept local religious practices alive, with a temple dedicated to Goddess Vanjai situated along the mountain route. Travelers passing through encounter evidence of how people have adapted their traditions to life in this highland region.
State buses run regular services through the pass, connecting Pune with destinations along the Mumbai-Goa Highway year-round. Travelers should expect changing weather conditions, particularly during monsoon season when roads become slippery and visibility drops.
During monsoon season, temporary waterfalls cascade down the mountain slopes, creating natural water displays throughout the passage. These seasonal falls appear for only a few months and vanish as rainfall diminishes.
