Umling La, Mountain pass in Ladakh, India.
Umling La is a mountain pass in Ladakh that sits at 5640 meters elevation and connects the villages of Chisumle and Demchok through an 86-kilometer road. The route runs through sparsely populated terrain with rocky ground and sparse vegetation across the remote high-altitude landscape.
The road over the pass was constructed and completed by India's Border Roads Organisation in 2017. This paved route became the world's highest motorable road, connecting communities that were previously isolated in this remote area.
Buddhist prayer flags flutter across the pass and mark the landscape as a sacred space for the communities living in this remote region. These colorful markers show how the local people connect their spiritual beliefs with the high-altitude environment around them.
Visitors need a special permit from the District Magistrate of Leh to cross this pass. Bringing supplementary oxygen is highly recommended because the air is extremely thin at this elevation and physical exertion becomes demanding.
Temperatures can plunge to minus 40 degrees Celsius, making it one of the coldest accessible places on earth. Oxygen levels in the air are only half of what is available at sea level, making any activity physically demanding.
