Jabal al Tumayah, Historical mountain in Ma'an Governorate, Jordan
Jabal al Tumayah is a mountain near Adruh that rises prominently in the Ma'an Governorate, offering sweeping views across the surrounding landscape from its summit. The hill features ancient fortification remains at its peak and is crossed by several natural springs along its base and slopes.
The mountain received its name in 657 CE when it served as a meeting place for peace negotiations between supporters of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Muawiya after the Battle of Siffin. The Romans had already fortified the location around 106 CE as a military center, turning the surrounding Adruh region into a strategic outpost.
The springs scattered around the base supply water that shaped how people lived here over centuries. Visitors can still see how the landscape and these water sources define the rhythm of settlement in the region.
The mountain lies roughly 22 kilometers north of Ma'an city and is reachable by established routes from nearby settlements. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and prepare for the exposed elevation and the arid climate typical of this region.
The summit hosted a crucial arbitration that sought to resolve a major dispute between two important leaders, giving the site lasting local significance. This peaceful purpose contrasted sharply with its earlier role as a military stronghold under Roman control.
