Nishiyamazuka Kofun, Ancient burial mound in Tenri, Japan.

The Nishiyamazuka Kofun is a keyhole-shaped burial mound in Tenri featuring both a round and square section that together create the distinctive form. The structure displays the sophisticated burial architecture and construction methods used during this period.

The mound was built in the 6th century and belongs to the Ōyamato Kofun Cluster in the region. This period marks the height of keyhole-mound construction before a shift toward different burial practices occurred.

The tomb served as a burial place for Princess Tashiraka and reflects the funeral practices of ancient Japanese society. The surroundings and ceremonial activities that took place here reveal the high status of the person interred within.

The site can be reached through the Yamanobe-no-michi path, which connects multiple historical locations in the area. Walking this trail gives you a chance to explore other kofun sites and ancient places nearby.

The mound features three distinct tiers covered with special stones that reveal the complexity of its burial chamber arrangement. Beneath both the round and square sections lie separate interment facilities, pointing to the importance of multiple individuals at this location.
