Yamato Tenjin'yama Kofun

Yamato Tenjin'yama Kofun is a burial mound with a distinctive keyhole shape, featuring a square section at the front and a circular section at the rear. The mound stretches for approximately 210 meters in total length.

This burial mound dates to the early-to-middle 5th century during the Kofun period. It emerged when centralized power was taking shape in the Nara Basin.

The terracotta figures discovered here show people and houses from that period. They reveal how people lived and how the dead were honored during those times.

The mound sits near Izanagi Shrine and is accessible to visitors through a public park in Tenri. You can walk around the site freely during daylight hours.

Archaeological excavations uncovered a stone sarcophagus typical of the Kansai region. This suggests strong ties to the ancient Yamato kingdom.
