Higaida Ōtsuka Kofun, Ancient burial mound in Sakurai, Japan
Higaida Ōtsuka Kofun is an ancient burial mound in Sakurai built in a distinctive keyhole shape with a circular front and square rear section. The earthwork rises several meters above ground and represents the architectural style typical of large elite tombs from this period.
This mound was built around 300 CE and is part of the Makimuku Kofun Cluster, a group of burial sites from this era. The tombs reflect a period when early forms of political organization were developing across ancient Japan.
The tomb structure contains burial chambers with stone walls where wooden coffins were placed, following the customs of early Japanese elite burials.
The site is accessible from outside, though it is helpful to gather local information before visiting as signage is limited. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the terrain is uneven and walking up the mound requires some effort.
Archaeological excavations revealed pottery pieces and ceremonial items that show the craftsmanship of people from this period. These findings suggest the mounds served not just as burial places but also as religious and ceremonial centers for local communities.
