Orangi, Municipality in northwestern Karachi, Pakistan
Orangi is a municipality in northwestern Karachi that spans a large urban area divided into administrative divisions serving hundreds of thousands of people. The area consists of neighborhoods with residential blocks, commercial zones, and public spaces developed over several decades.
The municipality was founded in the early 1970s as Karachi expanded and needed new residential areas to accommodate its growing population. Growth accelerated later when significant waves of migration brought people from different regions to settle in the area.
The population includes Pashtuns representing 55 percent, Muhajirs at 30 percent, along with Afghans, Balochis, Bengalis, Punjabis, and Sindhis communities.
A rapid transit bus system connects the area with central Karachi, making it easy to reach other parts of the city from here. For getting around within the municipality itself, local minibuses and shared taxis are the most common and practical option for visitors.
Residents implemented their own sewerage infrastructure through the Orangi Pilot Project during the 1980s when municipal services were insufficient.
