Fort Pasir Panjang, Military fort in Labrador Park, Singapore
Fort Pasir Panjang is a military fortification at the southern tip of Singapore Island within Labrador Park, equipped with two 6-inch guns to protect the entrance to Keppel Harbour. The structure features an underground tunnel network with reinforced chambers that demonstrate its strategic coastal defense design.
The British military built this fortification in the 19th century as one of eleven coastal artillery posts to defend Singapore from maritime threats. The underground tunnel system was completed in 1886 and represents the engineering standards of that era.
Local granite formations nearby were called Dragon's Teeth by Chinese seafarers and Batu Berlayar by Malay sailors, meaning Sailing Rock. These names show how different communities viewed and used this coastal area throughout history.
Some of the underground tunnels are open to visitors and provide a view of the military design and defense systems. Wear comfortable shoes as the paths can be uneven, and plan to spend time exploring the various chambers and passageways.
An underground ammunition storage chamber called the Casemate from 1886 survives intact within the fort. This chamber demonstrates how the British engineers designed secure storage for weapons and ordnance during active coastal defense operations.
