Hershey Community Center Building, building in Pennsylvania, United States
The Hershey Community Center Building is a historically significant structure in Hershey, Pennsylvania, built in the early 1930s and comprising five stories. It houses a large theater, a smaller theater, a gymnasium, a swimming pool, game rooms, and locker rooms all within a building constructed of Indiana limestone.
Construction began in 1928 and was completed in 1932, with the official opening taking place in September 1933 to celebrate the town's 30th anniversary. The project was carried out during the Great Depression and provided employment to many local workers during difficult times.
The building originally served as a community gathering place with theater, sports facilities, and game rooms where people of all ages came together. This role as a cultural hub continues to shape how the place is understood as a space for shared experiences.
The building sits between the campuses of Milton Hershey School and Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning, making access convenient from both school locations. Visitors should know that the building is currently undergoing renovation and is being restructured in part for new purposes.
The theater within the building, known as the Hershey Theatre, has been donated to the M.S. Hershey Foundation and will continue to be used for performances, educational programs, and community gatherings. This transfer ensures the cultural mission of the space continues for future generations.
