USS Grunion, Submarine in the United States of America
The USS Grunion was a Gato-class submarine that served as a combat vessel for the United States Navy during World War II. The boat rests on the ocean floor near the Aleutian Islands in remote Alaskan waters and can be explored by divers today.
The submarine vanished in July 1942 while on patrol in the Aleutian region shortly after Japan attacked the area. Its wreck remained unknown for more than 75 years until family members of the commanding officer located it in 2017.
The wreck serves as a memorial to the sailors who served aboard and the sacrifices made during the Pacific War. It represents a place where visitors can reflect on individual stories rather than just historical facts.
The wreck lies in very deep water in a remote area of Alaska, making it accessible only to experienced divers with specialized equipment. Visits are rare and require extensive planning while also accounting for extreme ocean conditions in the region.
The wreck was discovered by a private search team led by relatives of the late commanding officer, making it a rare story of a family finding answers after decades. This discovery drew international attention and raised awareness about what happened to the vessel.
