South Jersey is a large region in the southern portion of New Jersey that stretches from the Delaware River to the Atlantic Ocean, covering seven counties with forests, coastlines, and urban centers. The landscape shifts between dense pine woodlands inland and wide sandy beaches along the shore, while smaller towns and rural communities dot the area.

The territory was originally home to the Lenape people before Quaker settlers arrived in the 17th century and founded the West Jersey province. Agricultural settlements grew along the rivers and shaped the early economy of the area.

The name comes from the southern position within the state, and locals often identify with this region more than with the northern parts. Beach towns draw families during summer months, while farming communities continue their agricultural traditions inland.

The area is accessible via several highways connecting from Philadelphia and New York City. Coastal towns get crowded during summer, while inland forest areas remain quieter in autumn and offer walking trails.

The Pine Barrens occupy a large portion of the region and shelter rare plants and animals adapted to sandy soil. This area remains mostly undeveloped and serves as a drinking water source for several million people.
