The North End Historic District is a residential area with more than 400 buildings located in Newport News near the major shipyard. The district spreads across several blocks and displays a mix of large homes and smaller residences from different periods.
The neighborhood developed between 1900 and 1935 when the shipbuilding industry was expanding rapidly and attracting workers to the area. This period shaped how the district looked and who lived there.
The homes display Victorian, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow styles that show how shipyard executives and their workers chose to live during the early 20th century. Walking through the streets, you see these different architectural choices side by side, revealing the social structure of the neighborhood.
The district is easy to explore on foot and has clear boundaries along several main streets. Wear comfortable shoes, as you will walk up and down various streets to see the different homes and neighborhoods.
The neighborhood earned the nickname Gold Coast, while one street became known as Mahogany Row because of its especially grand homes. These names reveal how the wealth in the district varied from block to block.
