Koyamada Kofun, Square burial mound in Asuka, Japan
The Koyamada Kofun extends 80 meters on its southern edge and features stone slabs piled along its northern and western faces in Nara Prefecture.
Archaeological investigations in 2018 revealed modifications to the western face of the mound, where stone slabs were removed to accommodate a jar burial placement.
The burial structure represents the architectural practices of seventh-century Japan, displaying advanced engineering through its stone construction and dimensional planning.
Researchers continue excavations at the site to determine the identities of individuals buried within and gather information about ancient Japanese burial customs.
The presence of specific stone materials and construction techniques at Koyamada Kofun suggests connections to royal-class tombs of the period.
