Four Seasons, Public mosaic at Chase Tower Plaza in Chicago, US
Four Seasons is a mosaic wrapping four sides of a rectangular structure at Chase Tower Plaza, depicting Chicago scenes and nature motifs with thousands of colored tiles. The artwork uses more than 250 color tones to create its intricate design.
The mosaic arrived in Chicago through a charitable gift in 1974 and was dedicated at this location. The artist collaborated with craftspeople to translate the original design into this permanent installation.
The mosaic depicts Chicago scenes alongside motifs from Russian-Jewish tradition such as birds, fish, and flowers. This blend of local and heritage elements creates a visual conversation that honors both worlds.
The mosaic is located outdoors on a building facade in downtown Chicago and is visible at any time. A protective glass canopy shields it from weather, helping preserve the colors and details over time.
A craftsperson spent two years translating the original design onto concrete panels while the artist continuously adjusted the work on site. This extended creation process meant the final result differed from the initial sketches.
