Whitehaven, Neoclassical mansion in Paducah, United States
Whitehaven is a two-story brick building with eight Corinthian columns framing its front entrance and ornate plaster work adorning the ceilings throughout. The interior features a grand central staircase that serves as the focal point of the home's classical layout.
Edward Anderson built this brick residence in 1865 as a farmhouse, and Edward Atkins later renovated it in 1903 to reflect Classical Revival design principles. The transformation marked a shift from a simple rural dwelling to an elegant classical estate.
The second floor houses a collection dedicated to Vice President Alben Barkley, featuring furniture and personal belongings he used during his time in office.
The house is located near Interstate 24 at Exit 7, making it easily accessible from the main highway. Daily tours provide guided access to the interior and allow visitors to explore the rooms and collections at their own pace.
This is the only historic house in the United States that serves as both an official state welcome center and an interstate rest stop. The dual function allows travelers to visit a preserved historical building while taking a break on their journey.
