Bulgogi Hut, Korean restaurant in Koreatown, Los Angeles, US
Bulgogi Hut is a Korean barbecue restaurant in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles, where marinated meats are grilled directly at the table on built-in gas or charcoal grills. The name comes from bulgogi, one of the most recognized Korean grilled meat dishes, made with thinly sliced marinated beef.
Koreatown in Los Angeles took shape from the 1960s onward, as Korean immigration to the city grew steadily over the following decades. The neighborhood went through major changes after the 1992 Los Angeles riots, which heavily affected the area before it rebuilt and expanded.
As in many Korean restaurants, the meal comes with a spread of small complimentary side dishes called banchan, such as kimchi, pickled vegetables, and tofu. These are refilled throughout the meal and are considered a natural part of eating together.
Arriving with a group makes the experience easier to enjoy, since the table grill is designed for sharing and cooking multiple cuts at once. Staff can guide you through the menu and help manage the grill if needed.
Bulgogi was historically a dish reserved for special occasions in Korea, as beef was scarce and considered a luxury for most of the population. It only became a common restaurant dish during the latter half of the 20th century as living standards changed.
