Mukuni Village, Traditional village and handicraft market near Victoria Falls, Zambia.
Mukuni Village is a traditional settlement on sandy elevated ground near Victoria Falls, where the Leya community lives in simple houses arranged informally. The adjacent market area displays handcrafted goods and reflects the daily rhythms of village life.
The settlement was established in the 13th century when the Leya people settled the area and initially named it Gundu. Over time it became known as Mukuni and remained central to the Leya community's life.
Local artisans craft wooden sculptures, stone carvings, and woven baskets using methods passed down through families. You can watch them work and purchase pieces directly from the makers in the market area.
The village is best explored with a local guide who can show you residential areas and craft workshops. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and sandy, with unpaved paths throughout.
The Mukuni Chiefdom extends over more than 100 surrounding settlements, making it an administrative center with its own educational and health infrastructure. This structure shows how the Leya community organizes its entire region independently.
