Pulau Puhawang, Coastal island in Pesawaran, Indonesia.
Pulau Puhawang is a coastal island in Pesawaran located at the mouth of Teluk Ratai bay, featuring sandy beaches on its northern shore and dense mangrove forests along its edges. The island comprises two main sections: a larger inhabited area and a smaller uninhabited portion with protected marine areas.
Settlement on the island began in the 1700s when Nokoda arrived and was later followed by a Chinese visitor named Hawang, whose name became the origin of the island's own name. These early arrivals established the foundation for the communities that exist there today.
The six villages scattered across the island each follow their own customs and daily rhythms rooted in generations of settlement. Walking through these communities, you notice how local traditions shape everything from the way houses are built to how people organize their work and celebrations.
To reach the island, take a speedboat from Dermaga Ketapang port, which takes about thirty minutes from mainland Lampung. Plan your visit during drier months when sea conditions are calmer and the journey is more comfortable.
The island's name actually comes from the daughter of Hawang, one of the early Chinese settlers, making the place a living memorial to that founder's family. This family connection appears throughout local stories and place names that older residents continue to share today.
