Flume Gorge

Flume Gorge, Natural granite gorge formation in Lincoln, New Hampshire.

This narrow granite chasm extends 800 feet through Franconia Notch State Park, featuring towering walls that rise 70 to 90 feet high while maintaining a width of only 12 to 20 feet between the Conway granite formations.

Discovered in 1808 by 93-year-old Aunt Jess Guernsey while fishing, the gorge originally contained a suspended egg-shaped boulder measuring 10 feet high and 12 feet long that was washed away during an 1883 storm.

The site has served as a cornerstone of New Hampshire tourism since the late 19th century, contributing significantly to Lincoln's economy and establishing the White Mountains region as a premier destination for nature enthusiasts and families.

The gorge operates daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM from May through October, requiring advance online reservations during peak seasons, with entrance fees applying and sturdy footwear recommended for the wooden walkways.

The geological formation originated nearly 200 million years ago during the Jurassic Period when basalt dikes crystallized along granite fractures, creating the distinctive narrow passageway that visitors can explore today through a series of bridges and viewing platforms.
