Smithville Apothecary, Historic pharmacy building in Smithville, US

The Smithville Apothecary is a Queen Anne-style building moved from Manahawkin to its present site off Moss Mill Road in Historic Smithville. It now houses the Jewelry Box of Smithville. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 9, 1978, for its architecture and commerce.

The structure was built around 1885 and originally designed as an apothecary before being relocated to Smithville. Over time it served multiple purposes including a telephone exchange, post office, and Girl Scouts headquarters.

Built around 1885 by Dr. John Lewis Lane as a pharmacy in Manahawkin, the building was sold in 1894 and became the Barnegat Exchange of the telephone company. It later housed the local post office and served as headquarters for the local Girl Scouts before the Smithville Inn bought it and moved it to Historic Smithville, where it now operates as the Jewelry Box of Smithville.

The site is located at an accessible spot in Smithville and is easy to reach from local landmarks and nearby buildings. Visitors can view the exterior at any time and explore attractions in the surrounding area.

The building has been adapted multiple times to serve new functions, reflecting how community needs shifted throughout the 20th century. This transformation remains visible in how the space remained intact across its different uses.
