Sacred Heart Church

Sacred Heart Church stands on 16th Street and Buckeye Road, featuring modern architecture with distinctive red brick walls and large windows.

The church structure emerged from a simple ramada with a dirt floor in 1950 to its completion and blessing by Bishop Gercke in 1956.

The church remains the final standing structure from Golden Gate Barrio, representing decades of religious services for the local Mexican American community.

The Braun Sacred Heart Center maintains the building through a lease agreement with the City of Phoenix, allowing annual Christmas Day masses.

Despite displacement of the surrounding neighborhood through eminent domain in the 1970s and 1980s, the church received National Register status in 2012.
