Tears of the Turtle Cave, Limestone cave in Bob Marshall Wilderness, Montana, US.
Tears of the Turtle Cave is a limestone cave in the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana that extends through narrow passages with approximately 50 rope drops, spanning 1.88 miles overall. The passages range from very tight openings to larger sections requiring technical rope work and climbing skills.
The cave was discovered in 2006 and quickly gained attention for its remarkable depth. Since 2014, it has held the title of deepest limestone cave in the United States.
The Northern Rocky Mountain Grotto leads scientific research expeditions to study water sources and map unexplored sections of the underground network.
Access is limited to experienced cavers with proper equipment and technical skills. Most visitors need to join organized expeditions with trained guides to explore the cave safely and responsibly.
Only six people have reached the deepest sections, where a permanent camp called Camp Dangle supports ongoing research missions. This isolated base camp demonstrates the commitment of researchers mapping the underground system.
