Tell Agrab, Archaeological settlement mound in Diyala Governorate, Iraq.
Tell Agrab is an archaeological settlement mound in the Diyala region with remains from the Early Dynastic period. The site covers a substantial area and contains temple foundations, defensive walls, and residential structures dating back thousands of years.
Excavations by the Oriental Institute of Chicago in the 1930s revealed fortification systems and religious structures from the Early Dynastic period. These findings contributed significantly to understanding early settlement patterns and defensive architecture in Mesopotamia.
The excavations uncovered a substantial Early Dynastic temple measuring 60 meters square, containing a main sanctuary with an altar and two additional smaller worship spaces.
The site requires preparation as it lies in a remote area with harsh conditions. Visitors should bring water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear due to uneven terrain.
Among the discoveries was a copper chariot drawn by four onagers, one of the earliest known examples of wheeled vehicles. This remarkable find demonstrates the technological abilities of early Mesopotamian civilizations.
